Sara Hill’s Top Tips for Winter Skin

Read make-up artist Sara Hill's 10 Top Tips for Beautiful Winter Skin

  1. Switch to an oil-based moisturiser and moisturise twice a day. The more oil a moisturiser contains, the more of a protective layer is created on the skin and makes it more “moisturising” than creams and lotions. You can also add oils like lavender into your existing creams and lotions, if you don’t want change what you have.
  2. Wear a sunscreen. Some people get a false sense of security from the cold temperature and forget that there are still harmful UV [ultraviolet] rays from the sun during winter. So, in either your moisturiser or foundation, wear a minimum of SPF15.
  3. The lips need protection too, so try lip balms with SPF. Vaseline is not a lip balm it’s a barrier ointment. Try Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Lip Protectant , £8.99 (SPF15) or something similar with more moisture.
  4. Avoid dry chapped hands. Why expose them to the cold? Protect your hands with a good quality pair of gloves that doesn’t irritate your skin. It will help keep your hands dry and warm. Top tips to soothe and repair your hard working hands: Put your hand cream on and wear disposable plastic gloves while you’re in the bath or whilst washing up. For an amazing steam treatment: Leave on for 20 minutes.
  5. Add oil in your bath - Jojoba oil or sweet almond not only smell amazing and are inexpensive, but by adding a few drops of these oils into your every day bath, it will do wonders for your dry, winter skin.
  6. Your foundation should match your skin tone all year round. There’s nothing worse than an orange face and tan lines around the jaw line when it’s snowing outside. So recheck the colour of your foundation, or calm down on the bronzer and opt for rosy cheek blush instead.
  7. Drink plenty of Water. Your body is working hard dealing with going from extremes like warm central heating to cold icy outdoors and needs to replace tired, damaged cells. Drink plenty of water to keep yourself balanced and hydrated.
  8. Exfoliate - but not every day. It takes your skin 3-5 days to renew itself, so give those juicy new cells a chance to surface!  I recommend exfoliating no more than twice a week, so get rid of daily face washes that contain exfoliate beads. They are too harsh and leave your skin more prone to damage.
  9. No face wipes. Most face wipes contain alcohol, which dries out the skin. As they don’t use water you’re only cleaning the surface, not deep down pore cleaning. This may cause blackheads and blocked pores. Try cream and lotion cleansers as they are much gentler and preferably ones you use with water and rinse off rather than tissue off. Try Clarins Cleansing & Toning Duo £23.99.
  10. Treat your skin. If your husband or partner is wondering what to get you for Christmas, why not ask for an oxygen facial. It is used to deliver antioxidants to the skin, and protects the epidermis from sun damage, pollution and stress. A perfect pamper treat to fight off those winter blues and that stressful Christmas shopping.
