Sports Bras on test

The best sports bras for every activity

BEST FOR TENNIS: Sportjock Super Sports bra, £29

'It took me a while to squeeze into this as you have to pull it over your head, but with no wires or fastenings, it was very comfortable. I normally wear a straitjacket affair that keeps my DDs in place, but feels constricting. This one is cleverly constructed, with two layers of comfy fabric to prevent bounce, and a strong, elasticated chest band so the bra doesn't shift up when you serve, plus the racer back keeps the straps in place. And thanks to the range of colours, you could wear it on its own without looking like you're playing in your undies.'

Verdict: Excellent support with great freedom of movement. Comes in five sizes: XS to XL.

BEST FOR RUNNING: Shock Absorber 'Run' bra, £36

'I never go without underwiring, so I doubted this bra would be able to handle my DDs, but it was seriously supportive. Research says that running makes your bust joggle in a figure-of-eight movement, but I felt not a stir. OK, it was a little tricky to fasten the straps, which hook up at the back, but, once strapped in, it felt very comfortable. The straps are connected in two places at the back, so they don't budge an inch - there's no need to hoist them back into the right place as you run. This running-specific bra was a definite improvement on my sports bra and I've already made the switch.'

Verdict: Fiddly at first but worth the effort. An extensive range of sizes, from 30A to 38F.

BEST FOR CYCLING: Freya sports bra, £26

'Cycling is a reasonably low-impact activity, but that sudden up and down jerk when you hit a bump isn't good for long-term perkiness. Unlike many sports bras, this one didn't flatten my chest, and has underwiring which gave me a flattering shape - just because I cycle doesn't mean I want to look like I've got a bosom like a bolster. I gave the bra a good test drive on my commute home, and felt secure and comfortable through every pot hole. In fact, I would have been happy to use this for a more rigorous workout - say a spin and treadmill session at the gym. Overall, a great bra.'

Verdict: Multi-purpose and flatters your shape. Sized for larger cups only: 32D to 38H.

BEST FOR YOGA: Triumph Triaction Crosspower Sports Top, £20

'I didn't think I'd need a specific sports top for yoga, but I'm converted. Unlike my usual sports bra, this didn't twist around or ride up however far I bent and stretched, nor leave those indented strap marks. The racer back made it so comfortable, I almost forgot I was wearing it. But my favourite feature is the clasp closure. Being able to hook it like a traditional bra is a bonus - tight crop-top styles can be a struggle to peel off once you get really sweaty. It's designed for high impact workouts, but as a C-cup, I'd keep it for the yoga mat, rather than the road.'

Verdict: As flexible as any yogi. Comes in three sizes: small, medium and large.
