The Tall Poppy Guide to Weight Management
Wake Up and Smell the Skinny Latte
So, I gave up smoking, and took up doughnuts. Turns out this isn’t the best idea if you want to fit into the same pair of jeans on a long-term basis. Next thing I knew, I found myself with new jeans that were 4 dress sizes larger and every time I looked in the mirror, my Grandma was staring back at me – and she was wearing huge jeans! Something had to be done.
I had never been on the diet trail before, so this was a whole new world for me. I joined a weight loss class, established my ideal weight and discovered I had 4 stone to lose to get back to those cute jeans I liked in the first place. The rest has been very straightforward – I’ve lost 1.5 stone in the past 5 months by paying attention to what I eat and how much I move around, counting the points and I feel fantastic already! So, what’s my secret? Did you miss it? I’ve told you … didn’t you spot it? Have another look back over the paragraph … got it? I gave it my attention. That’s the secret. Giving you your attention.
My work as a Coach has helped me, obviously, because I am constantly working with people to support them in taking responsibility for their lives and the outcomes they are experiencing and working on ways to change the less favourable ones, so it’s in my deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA – just been desperate to drop that word into conversation at some point!) to do something about the outcome that was making me miserable, and now you can, too. So, here’s the radical thing about weight management – if you feel you weigh too much or too little, give it your attention, take the actions you need to, make the changes, watch and wait then celebrate the success.
(This amazing new theory works for other stuff, too – if you want a new car/holiday/dress/iPod give it your attention – be conscious, save the money and you will have it; if you want to grow your own veg, give it your attention – find somewhere to grow them, buy the seeds, sow them, then wait and watch the produce grow. It’s crazy, but it works, believe me!)
If you are expecting any other theory, forget it. This is the only one that works – here it is again, this time with bullet points:
• Give whatever you want to change/do your attention
• Take the actions you need to
• Make the changes
• Watch and Wait for Success
• Celebrate each success (but not with doughnuts if you’re trying to lose weight)
L’Oreal tell us we are free to buy and use their shampoos and hair products in order to achieve the look of shiny lustrous hair because we’re worth it, therefore we must be, surely? Well, unless you put yourself first occasionally, then no, you’re not. And if you’re not happy, nobody’s happy (or is that just in my home?!) and that’s just ugly. I used to spend a good 15 minutes moaning and wailing at the wardrobe each morning trying to find something to wear that didn’t make me look like an septogenarian hippo (in my eyes), and my whole family was kept waiting or subjected to the grumpy mum/wife that finally emerged. Make yourself worth it. Give it your attention. And don’t smoke either, it’s rubbish!
