Top 10 fat-busting foods
1. Lemons – a natural detoxer
This means that they help to eliminate toxins, and as your body wraps fat and water round toxins to keep them away from your essential organs, your body will lose more fat and decrease water retention as a result. Add fresh lemon juice to hot water, drizzle it over stir fries and salads, or even better include it in a fresh vegetable-based juice in the morning.
2. Celery – chew off calories!
Celery is packed full of nutrients and is a high water-based food, so low in calories as well. Not only that, you can actually burn more calories chewing celery than the amount of calories you consume eating them. Now that’s my kind of food
3. Avocados – eat fat to lose fat
Avocados are simply brilliant for boosting fat loss so do not be scared of their higher fat content. Avocados are full of essential fats and this makes your fat cells function and respond better. In addition, your body is able to utilise the fats to help you hair, skin, and nails look and feel better and so 1g of saturated fat is completely different to 1g of unsaturated fat - a perfect 4pm snack.
4. Chillies – spice and speed it up
Chillies are known to boost metabolism – in fact one study in America showed that eating one spicy meal a day can boost metabolism up to 25%. Chillies are great for making bland food tasty and pretty much calorie-free – so perfect for helping shift excess flab. Add to salads, stir-fries, fish and chicken dishes, using fresh or even the dry chilli flakes as the additional calorie burn lasts up to three hours after you stop eating, you’ve got to love that.
5. Water – Drink the fat away
Being hydrated is crucial when wanting to boost fat loss, so aim for two litres of water a day. This will not only help to flush out toxins but also means your body will function better and have more energy, allowing you to increase your daily metabolism. Add fresh lemon for a double fat-burning boost.
6. Green leaves – Eat your greens
Spinach, kale, watercress and rocket are packed full of nutrients and enzymes and are practically calorie-free so great for bulking out meals without piling on extra pounds. Aim to eat four portions of these a day (ideally from salads or juicing) and see the fat shift fast. Green leaves are also high in calcium and iron and many studies show that higher levels in these minerals means you can lose fat quicker, yay!
7. Eggs – A great source of protein
Eggs are easily digested, versatile and a great source of protein which also means you feel fuller for longer, helping reduce calorie intake. Hollywood A-listers are renowned for tucking into egg white omelettes for breakfast and that’s because this part of the egg has the least amount of fat. Think egg salads, poached eggs on asparagus, scrambled eggs and smoked salmon and if you want to be good like the Hollywood girls, but can’t face just egg whites, try one yolk to three whites instead.
8. Oats – Kick start your day the right way
Oats are a rich source of fibre, which pumps up your metabolism. Oats also break down slowly in your stomach, which means you shouldn’t get an energy crash after eating them in the way bread or sugary cereals do. Eating a good breakfast can increase metabolism by around 10% and if you add seeds instead of sugar to this kind of breakfast you will have a double-whammy fat burning effect.
9. Salmon – up your Omega-3 intake
Salmon contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which can lower the levels of a hormone in your body called leptin. Lower leptin levels are associated with a higher caloric burn. Salmon is also another great source of protein which means that you will feel satiated more after eating it. Bake in foil packets with herbs and vegetables for the ultimate (and quick) healthy dinner.
10. Sleep – the secret fat buster
If you are tired your body will make you conserve energy, crave sugary foods and slow metabolism down – all the things you want to avoid when you want to lose weight! Getting an early night and getting good quality sleep is essential for long term weight management. Use lavender spray or oil if you have trouble winding down at the end of a busy day and its definitely better to get to bed earlier than it is to lie in. So ditch the late nights, and get some zzzzzzzzz!
