Superfoods

We all know how important it is to have a healthy balanced diet. Who hasn’t heard about the need to consume ‘5-a-day’? However, I think for most of us (me included and I like to think I eat pretty healthily) this is way easier said then done.

So, when over recent years we’re being told more than ever about the need to up the ante and get involved with Superfoods, I’m definitely wondering how it’s possible to always be so vigilant with what I eat. And what are these so-called superfoods anyway? When I grew up it was a case of ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’. I can’t recall anyone going around saying, ‘a flaxseed a day keeps the doctor away’. The idea of superfoods seem like they are a lot of effort to get your hands on. You probably can’t just pop down to your local Tesco and pick up a superfood in its purest form, like you can a banana or carrot…can you?

To get you up to speed, basically, according to www.foodmatters.tv, superfoods are a superior source of anti-oxidants and essential nutrients found in nature. They haven’t been processed like the majority of other foods we eat so still maintain the optimum nutrient levels with vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids. You’ll find many superfoods come in supplement form but instead of taking a load of pills, wouldn’t it be better to include superfoods in your actual meals?

Lucky for us Linwoods have solved the healthy eating dilemma. They have harnessed the power of superfoods and ground them down into user friendly ‘milled’ form. This means you can scatter a couple of tablespoons over your porridge, salad, soup, smoothies, granola or even use them in cooking and baking. Linwoods have produced an easy and tasty way to get even more goodness out of each meal without feeling like you’re being strict or depriving yourself of treats. I was actually surprised by the great flavour and when I added the sunflower and pumpkin seed combo to my basic sit-at-my desk salad it definitely jazzed it up!

The Linwoods superfoods range aim to help you manage a healthy body weight, improve condition of skin and hair, maintain a healthy heart, boost fibre intake and energy levels. So pretty much just make you an all-round healthier person! I must admit I felt fuller longer and not inclined to snack on choccy biscuits mid-morning after adding some of the flaxseed, almond, brazil, walnuts and Q10 to my porridge. I know that sounds like a lot of ingredients to add but they really are ground so fine, it just blends easily into the rest of the of the meal and won’t make you cringe like throwing back a wheatgrass shot does! All you need is a couple of spoonfuls everyday mixed into any meal – easy.

At the end of the day we can’t deny the importance of a healthy lifestyle but I’m no saint. I’m never going to put myself through a gruelling diet or cut out the luxuries (adding fruit to a cocktail is totally at least half one of the 5-a-day). I firmly believe in the ‘everything in moderation’ motto. So, if I can boost the good things I eat by adding a little extra something super, then I’m left feeling fab about myself and I’m sure my body is thanking me too! It doesn’t feel like effort either, most of us scatter salt and pepper over our meals so why not scatter over this mixture of goodness instead. I advise getting your hands on some Linwoods Superfoods as a motivational step towards creating that perfectly well-balanced diet.

Obviously now that you've reached the point at which discussions are about to turn into decisions, you'd prefer that the arrangements you organise be lasting. But that's not only unlikely, with this weekend's eclipse shaking things up, it's unrealistic. Aim for the best you can do now, but expect changes. Lots of them. By Shelley von Strunckel
